Somewhere a piece of furniture, or a clock case, or a gilded frame, wore this on its front. It was never meant to be the thing you looked at. It was meant to catch the light at the edge of your eye and suggest that whatever it was attached to had been made with care. Libby found it separated from whatever it once adorned, chose it anyway, and brought it home.

SIZE: 6"x4" approx

A vertical asymmetric cartouche in gilt brass, worked with C-scrolls that curl inward like a wave deciding whether to break, acanthus leaves along the crest, and a run of gadrooning cradling a smooth domed cabochon at the center. The gilding is still warm and bright across the high points. In every recess, the brass has gone green and dark, which is the only honest way for brass to spend a century.

Condition, told plainly. Good decorative condition overall. Verdigris and darkening settled into the recesses, with minor rubbing to the high points where hands or cloths once passed. There is edge irregularity and possible small loss at the lower right, and one scroll terminal at the lower left appears bent. No fixing hardware present; the mounting method on the reverse is still to be confirmed.

A note on provenance. The Rococo attribution is made on style alone. Period, maker, and original use are unconfirmed, as is whether the piece was cast or stamped from sheet.
