Product Details
Original 19th-century French Comtoise (Morbier) clock face with its pierced gilt-brass repousse crest and ornamental surround. The white enamel dial is signed in red script "Chavin a Grenoble" - the maker and his town, Grenoble in the Isere - and is finely decorated with a scalloped (cloud-form) chapter ring, hand-painted pink and blue flowers and a ribbon bow. The crest shows the radiant sunburst mask over a flower basket flanked by acanthus, in a beaded/rope gilt surround with floret corners. Decorative architectural salvage - face/front assembly and reverse only. CONDITION - age-appropriate: enamel with crazing and some loss near the centre arbor (exposing copper), a few chips and spots; two winding holes; gilding worn with patina; thin repousse crest with minor denting/losses as typical. Reverse is a heavily oxidized/rusted iron plate. NOTE - the painted dial and red signature make this one of the more decorative faces in the group. No movement, hands, weights, pendulum, or case. Maker and town per the signature; date inferred from style. Dimensions, weight, price and cost to be confirmed by seller.
